GE Sensing - Panametrics - ultrasonic transit-time flowmeters - Obsolescence of Option Card Serial EEPROM (UPDATED)

Technical Background

Option cards used in the XMT868i, XGX868i, DF868 and GX868 Flowmeters contain a serial EEPROM that is used to store information locally on the PCB. This information includes PCB number, group number and calibration data. The serial EEPROM is read during meter startup and written to during the calibration process.

The EEPROM used before September 2010 is obsolete. There is a similar part that is widely available however and this new part is a hardware (HW) drop in replacement but requires software (SW) modification.

The main SW of the above meters requires changes to communicate with the new serial EEPROM. The SW is backwards-compatible meaning it will communicate with either new or old EEPROM.

How could this affect a customer?

If a customer adds an option card with the new serial EEPROM it will not be recognized by older versions of system SW. The customer will need to upgrade the system SW per SW update list below.

There is no problem adding an older? option card to a newer system with updated SW. The new SW will recognize old or new EEPROM.

Effectivity of the Change

As of about September 2010 all the above meters have been using the new version of software which allows use of old or new option cards.

As of April 1, or thereabouts, all of the above option cards in all of the meters will be converted to the new EEPROM.

An exception is the GF868 with HART. This special version of software has not been updated to use the new EEPROM at this time. A supply of the older EEPROMs will be reserved for use in option cards in GF868 with HART until the software can be revised.

GE Panametrics - PM880 price list revised to show only field replaceable spare parts.

The spare parts price list for the PM880 and PM880AC has traditionally included both spare parts and repair parts.   Repairing or replacing a part that requires breaking the seal of the PM880 is not allowed in the field, due to the NEMA 4X, IP67 rating, even if the you do not require this rating.

The price list no longer includes items such as the fuse, printed circuit boards, display, or back-up battery.  If any of the above need to be repaired or replaced, you must return the PM880 or PM880AC to Boston for repair.
This policy protects the PM880 from more expensive damage to the meter, if it is exposed to water intrusion and subsequent damage.  Thank you for understanding the benefit of this policy.
Transition to new MIS Probe 2. Original MIS Probe no longer available.

6 April 2011

In October 2010 we introduced the new MIS Probe 2 (MISP2).  This is a drop-in replacement for the original MIS Probe.

The original MIS Probe modules (MISPE) are no longer available and we need to transition to the MISP2.  To help with the transition, we have produced a data sheet that explains that the MISP2 is compatible to the original MIS Probe, outlines the benefits, and includes a cable selection guide to clarify the cables available for the MISP2.
